Thiá Sguoti is a trans artist whose research centers on the mythical figure of the mermaid. Graduated in Visual Arts, the artist establishes dialogues between mythology, culture, and lived experience, addressing issues of gender, aesthetics, and spirituality through multiple techniques.
Her practice investigates an iconography that proposes non-colonial forms of existence, materialized in works that traverse the symbolic and the sensorial. Sguoti creates fish tails as garments, enabling playful metamorphoses of real and imaginary bodies, and from them, explores other possibilities of transformation.
Is the first trans people to exhibit on a public museum at Itu (São Paulo - Brazil), made part of the Revista Amarello's artists team, she recently joined the inaugural exhibition of the first Transgender Museum of History and Art in Brazil, MUTHA, and has participated in group exhibitions such as As Jóias da Rainha (2024) curated by Renato de Cara at São Paulo Fashion Week, Vivarium (2024) curated by Núria Vieira at 25M (São Paulo), the 25th Salão de Artes Visuais de Vinhedo and the 69th Salão de Abril, in addition to his last solo exhibition Vesica Piscis: O Elo Perido (2025) curated by Thais Rivitti at lapa Lapa, in São Paulo, and fairs such as SP-Arte and ArPa, and the Kaaysá Art Residency on the north coast of São Paulo.
Thiá has also worked with Venezuelan artist Suwon Lee, and since 2021 has participated in the follow-up and research group at Ateliê397, Clínica Geral, mediated by curator Thais Rivitti.
In an incessant search to decipher certain symbolisms, Thiá Sguoti investigates mythology, corporeality and social performances to create mechanisms for accessing other realities. The artist creates everything from clothing to objects that allow us to experience play through metamorphoses – imaginary or not – that access a lost ancestry. Her work revolves around the figure of the mermaid, and the intersections of this iconography with contemporary times. In this process, the artist carries out poetic research that discusses existence, memory and the sacred.
